One of the best boardgames ever made, Axis and Allies combines the history and drama of the second world war with deep strategy lacking in many modern computer games.

Below is an excellent video about Axis & Allies

Unfortunately for me, I am a little out of date on this one. You see, the version of Axis & Allies that I am familiar with left store shelves in the 90's to be replaced by newer versions with more troop types and a different map. I'll give my strategic advice, but it applies mostly to the earlier generation of Axis & Allies.

In the original version, Russia has two critical first turn moves.

  1. Move the sub and transport to defend the ocean square around England. If you don't do this Germany might be able to take England on the first turn.
  2. Move the troops from the Caucasus to defend Mother Russia. The loss of these troops to early German aggression makes Russia much harder to hold.

The Guy in the video below has an interesting suggestion regarding the use of dice. Or rather, how not to use dice in Axis & Allies.

Here is a video of the old version I have played, apparently going through a game in 12 seconds... The game usually takes 2-5 hours.
